Aspiration is the accidental entry of a foreign substance into the respiratory tract. The consequences may be devastating, chronic or subtle. The aspirated material may be solid or liquid components of food, foreign bodies (e.g seeds, vegetables or toys) or even saliva (1). However, the causes and the material aspirated varies from locality to locality depending on among other things infant feeding practices, child rearing methods and prevailing materials easily accessible to children. The present review was hence undertaken to highlight the prevailing pattern of childhood aspiration syndromes in Ilorin at the time under review with a view to proffering feasible preventive recommendations.
