SUMMARY Objective: Mefloquine In The Treatment Of Drug Resistant Malaria In Pregnancy - A Short Report

SUMMARY

Objective: To assess the safety and efficacy of Mefloquine in the treatment of drug resistant malaria in pregnant women. Methods: Eleven consecutive pregnant women who had failed therapy for malaria were recruited. Mefloquine was administered and response to treatment assessed by clinical and parasitological evaluations.

Results: A mean parasite clearance of 2+0.8 days and fever clearance of 1.25 + 0.71 days were achieved. All the women delivered healthy babies. Conclusion: Study suggest that Mefloquine is efficacious and safe in the treatment of drug resistant malaria in pregnant women Niger Med. J, Vol 45, No. 1, January - March 2004: 17 - 18.
