Dear esteemed readers and professional colleagues of the Hippocratic calling,I heartily welcome you to this edition of MEDINEWS, the quarterly newsletter of our Association. I send fraternal greetings to you all on behalf of MEDINEWS. When news came to me in the second week of October (2006) that the National Officers' Committee of our Association had unanimously resolved to appoint me the new Editor of MEDINEWS, I took it cum grano salis because it was rare to get such anticipatory confirmations, bearing in mind that the National Committees of the NMA were yet to be constituted by the National Executive Council. However, the reality of my appointment became manifest with the subsequent disclosure of my new status by the President of NMA, the ever unassuming and soft-spoken Dr. Sunday Daniel Gana, mni.

I am very humbled and privileged by this appointment to serve as the Editor of MEDINEWS, with the prime responsibility to take the quarterly newsletter to a higher pedestal. I thank God for this appointment and I am profoundly grateful to the President of NMA and members of the National Officers' Committee for finding me appointable. May I also pay special homage to my predecessor, the Immediate Past Editor of MEDINEWS (currently the 1st Vice President of NMA), Dr. Rotimi Adewoye, for working so hard to revitalize MEDINEWS.

In this edition of MEDINEWS, an attempt was made to improve on the material content, outlook, and overall quality of the newsletter in such a way as to reflect the impressive vision, mission and strategic objectives of the Nigerian Medical Association. Consequently, the themes captured in this edition include the historic participation of NMA at the 57th annual General Assembly of the World Medical Association held in Pilanesberg, Sun City, South Africa (October 11-14, 2006); Fallouts from the 57th annual General Assembly of the World Medical Association; Dissemination of NMA's 5-year Strategic Plan; The conferment of the highest award of the NMA (FNMA) on the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Otunaya Odili; NMA-FSG reunification with Medic Africa Exhibition; News from World Health Organization (WHO); News from NIMSA; Medical Update; and a special interview with the NMA President, Dr. Sunday Daniel Gana, mni.

A unique feature of this edition is the presentation of an explosive and engaging interview with the Immediate Past President of the World Medical Association, Dr. Kgosi Letlape, an illustrious son of Africa passionately engaged in his quest to uplift humanity.Another addition to MEDINEWS is a column for Continuing Professional Development. In this edition, a Clinical Quiz and a Grand Essay Prize Competition were featured.

As improved as this edition of MEDINEWS may seem, I must confess that there may still be observed inadequacies. This is essentially due to the difficulties imposed by the limitation of time and other logistic problems. The difficulties not withstanding, as the Editor charged with the sole responsibility of producing MEDINEWS, I had to rise up to the challenge of putting together this edition of MEDINEWS single handedly. Nevertheless, I look forward to correcting any observed inadequacies in subsequent editions which I promise will be more panoramic and qualitative, as well as intellectually more robust than the current edition. For this reason, I humbly welcome contributions from all members of the Association on various issues such as research findings and breakthroughs, prevailing trends in Medicine, or new innovations in Medical diagnosis and treatment, Professional works, articles, jokes, critiques, events, and social activities. Moreover, I call on you to share with us your reactions and criticisms by way of feedback through our E-mail or postal address. I shall greatly appreciate your support so that we can collectively take MEDINEWS to the next level.

I wish you a merry Christmas and the best in the coming year. Compliments of the season.

Dr. Osahon Enabulele, M.B, B.S; MHPM; AMNIM
    Editor.
