NOTICE OF MANDATORY CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL DOCTORS
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria hereby reminds all medical doctors and dental surgeons of the extant regulation that all doctors must participate in suitable continuing professional development programmes in order to update their knowledge and skills to enhance their ability to render appropriate service to patients.
Council has directed that doctors be reminded that this participation in continuing professional development programmes is a mandatory requirement for licence renewal AND COUNCIL HAS DECIDED TO ENFORCE THIS during the licence renewals for the year 2003 and subsequently. The period of grace before the stated enforcement date is to enable all doctors take necessary steps to meet the requirement, as the intention is not to keep any qualified doctor out of practice, but rather to enhance the relevance currency and competence of all doctors.
To this end, the attention of all doctors is hereby called to the following details.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME?
Continuing Medical and Dental Education is designed to update and renew the knowledge and skills of practitioners for adequate and appropriate service to patients at all times. It is mandatory for all practitioners to acquire Continuing Medical and Dental Education for continuing registration and licensing with the council.
FOR WHOM
Resource persons and participants who participate fully at any accredited programme, such as Workshops, Seminars, Scientific Conferences, Update Lectures and Website Learning.
Teachers in accredited Medical Schools and Postgraduate training programmes.
Doctors who are purely on non-registrable and postgraduate training programmes.
Doctors attending structured training programmes with evidence of attendance
. Any doctor wishing to participate in any programme of his choice or relevant to his/her practice.
BY WHOM?
The following Institutions and organizations are authorized to organize Continuing Medical and Dental Education.
1. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
2. Accredited Medical and Dental Training Institutions.
3. Accredited Teaching and Specialist Hospitals.
4. Accredited State General Hospitals.
5. Accredited Voluntary Agency and Private Hospitals.
6. The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
7. The West African Postgraduate Medical College.
8. The Nigerian Medical Association.
9. The Nigerian Dental Association.
10. The Guild of Medical Directors.
11. The Association of General & Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria.
12. The Federal and State Ministries of Health.
13. The Foundations.
14. Professional Societies.
15. Accredited Overseas Professional Societies and Institutions.
16. Any other Institutions or Organisations that may be approved by Council from time to time.
CURRICULUM FOR CONTINUING MEDICAL AND DENTAL EDUCATION
The programme shall cover Basic Medical and Dental Sciences as well as Clinical Sciences in the following areas:
1. Pathology including Microbiology and Parasitology
2. Pharmacology and Therapeutics
3. Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Sub-Specialties
4. Paediatric and Sub-Specialties
5. Medicine and Medical Specialties
6. General Medical Practice
7. Surgery and Surgical Specialties
8. Public Health and occupational Health
9. Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Management
10. Sports Medicine
11. Dentistry and Specialties in Dental Surgery
12. Medical Ethics and Forenstic Medicine
13. General Principles of Management and Administration
14. Human Resources Management
15. Budgeting, Financial Management and Accounting Principles
16. Computer Studies and Management of Heads Information
17. Basic Legal Principles and Laws Concerning the Practice of Medicine.
18. All other areas that may be considered relevant from time to time.
REQUIREMENT FOR CONTINUED LICENSING
Any Continuing Medical and Dental Education Programme which runs for a duration of at least one (1) hour, earns a full participant one (1) credit unit. Programmes running for more than one (1) hour are rated accordingly. The current Regulation requires a medical doctor or a dental surgeon to obtain a minimum of thirty six (36) credit units in every two (2) years to be eligible for continued licensing.
A doctor who is below sixty five (65) years of age must obtain a minimum of twelve (12) units and a maximum of twenty-four (24) units yearly in order to meet the continuing professional education requirement.
