MEDICAL COUNCIL ADVERTISES POSITION OF REGISTRAR

The Medical And Dental council of Nigeria has advertised the position of the Registrar of Council which became vacant following the compulsory retirement of Dr. C. O. Ezeani in February 2005. In accordance with the Medical and Dental Practitioner Act Cap 221 laws of the Federation 1990 as subsequently amended, the Council has the power to appoint any fit and proper registered medical or dental practitioner to serve as Registrar with the duties as stated in the enabling law. In view of recent experience, Council has decided that any Registrar appointed would be for an initial tenure of 4 years which is renewable for a further and final term of 4 years only. Below is the text of the brief of the Chairman of Council following some unfortunate development that was reported after the retirement of Dr. Ezeani.

Brief on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for Ambassadors and High Commissioners in Nigeria.

It has unfortunately become necessary for the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to officially inform the foreign Embassies and High Commissions in Nigeria about the surprising and unusual behaviour of the former Registrar of the MDCN, Dr. Celestine Okwudili Ezeani. Dr. C. O. Ezeani, who had been the Registrar of the MDCN for many years was sent on compulsory leave from 26th November 2004, and subsequently compulsorily retired on 24th February 2005 for gross misconduct. Dr. Abdulmumini A. Ibrahim was appointed the Acting Registrar and the MDCN has been functioning normally.

Since then Dr. Ezeani has been embarrassing the MDCN in many ways. Recently, he has taken to writing to the regulatory bodies in countries around the globe, claiming that he was the Registrar of the MDCN, that any document emanating from the MDCN that did not have his name or signature on should be ignored. We have received replies from a number of these bodies in your countries. While we have taken pains to explain the situation to them, some might want to check with you to further ascertain the true position.

We have already published disclaimers in Nigerian press to indicate that the former Registrar, and his Deputy have been compulsorily retired and all correspondence from them should be disregarded. Further action would be taken against Dr. Ezeani to discipline him for the confusion he is causing in the medical world about the MDCN in foreign countries.

The MDCN hereby offers its apologies to you.

Assuring you of our continued cooperation with our Excellencies.

Kind regards from

SHIMA K. GYOH
Chairman of Council.
