Prevalence of Electrocardiographic Evidence of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy Among Hypertensive Patients in Ilorin, Nigeria

SUMMARY

Two hundred and forty newly diagnosed hypertensive patients aged between 23 and 80 years were studied for electrocardiographic(ECG) evidence of left ventricular hypertrophy(LVH) using three popular criteria in our center.

These criteria are Sokolow and Lyon’s, Araoye’s and Estes’.About seventy two (71.7%) had LVH by Sokolow and Lyon’s criteria, 56.7% by Araoye’s and 20% by Estes’ criteria.

It was therefore concluded that ECG LVH was prevalent among hypertensive patients with the rate dependent on the criteria applied. Niger Med J, 2003, Vol. 44(1): 7 - 9
